Minister
within the Ministry of labour, Human Services and Social Security,
Bibi Saddick, and Information Liaison to the President Robert
Persaud yesterday met with the Essequibo Coast woman and her
five-month-old baby who were robbed and beaten by bandits in broad
daylight near Demico House two weeks ago. The government officials
provided assistance, including help to defray the medical expense
of the injured baby.
The
two officials met Sonia Persaud
at the Office of the President, where they expressed the
government’s concern over the incident, which resulted in the
toddler’s left hand being fractured.
At
the meeting Mr. Persaud noted that the President was very
disturbed about the incident, especially the injuries little
Keisha sustained, and said that in light of all the robberies and
pick pocketing that have been occurring in the Stabroek area, his
government would intensify its fight against crime.
Sonia
and her daughter Keisha were robbed and beaten by three men in the
Stabroek area on June 17 as she was on her way to her Essequibo
home.

The
woman came to the city to collect her husband’s
paycheck at Preetipaul Singh Investment Company.
She
was robbed of the $20,000 that was in her handbag and her baby
sustained a fractured left arm and other body injuries when the
robbers took off with five gold rings, 2 pairs of gold bands and
one pair of gold bangle that the toddler was wearing.
The
government officials condemned this sad episode and urged
that the law enforcement agencies take additional steps to further
improve security for citizens.
Meanwhile,
Sonia and little Keisha are at home recovering from the traumatic
experience.
