Police have held two Mahaica residents following the discovery of the battered body of 41-year-old mechanic Jaiwan Singh called ‘Georgie', early yesterday morning.

Singh's body was discovered in his yard at 99 Unity, Mahaica, around 06:30 hours by a man who went to take some work for him to do.

Kaieteur News understands that the two suspects who have been detained were involved in an altercation with Singh on Sunday night.

They allegedly beat the mechanic with pieces of wood on that occasion.

Investigators believe that the same group of men went back to Singh's house on Monday night and inflicted another beating on him, which resulted in his death.

Police are questioning a friend who was reportedly with Singh when he was beaten on Monday night.

The friend is said to have sustained injuries also, after he too was beaten.

He managed to run to safety.

A source close to the investigation said that the friend is not being held as a suspect, but as a potential witness.

Reports stated that another villager went to Singh's house with a malfunctioning water pump for the mechanic to fix.

After calling out several times and getting no answer, the villager decided to leave.

However, upon seeing Singh's door open, the villager decided to check around the yard.

He made the shocking discovery of Singh's body lying on its side in the grass at the front of his yard.

The villager informed the mechanic's relatives, who quickly went to the house, where Singh lived alone.

The dead man's mother Soomanee Debi told Kaieteur News that she last saw her son alive on Saturday night.

She said yesterday morning a villager went to her home and told her that Singh was lying dead in his yard.

“Dis morning, one boy go and look fuh he fuh look after he water pump. Dem look fuh he and dem nah see he. But dem see de door open and when dem check again, dey see he deh lie down in de grass,” Debi told this newspaper.

“Me can't tell you wha happen, all me go and see he lie down dead,” the woman added.

She said it was not until yesterday morning while at the scene of the murder that she learnt that her son was beaten on Sunday night.

“Somebody beat am Sunday night, but he nah tell nobody. Me hear dem go in de house and beat am an is de neighbour who had to chase dem. But like dem go back last night (Monday) and finish he off,” Debi explained.

She said that the nighbours could not say what happened on Monday night.

The family believes that after beating Singh unconscious, his killers tried to revive him by dragging his body to a nearby drain and pouring water on him.

They eventually left him there when it was realised that he was already dead.

Relatives said that they have already informed singh's wife and his son who are both living overseas.

When this newspaper visited the scene, a police tape was placed at the entrance of Singh's house while there were bloodstains leading from the steps to the grass in the yard.

A police source said that they were given information about other suspects that were allegedly involved in the murder and investigators are making every effort to apprehend them as soon as possible.
