I was at Dolly Baksh's funeral at the La Repentair
cemetry in 79 or 80 (not sure). They said at
the time, according to Muslim rites the coffin is
not usually put down and open for viewing in the cemetry.
However, this funeral had such a huge crowd,
people were insisting and begging for a glimpse of the
late Dolly Baksh, the darling of Indian dance during
her time.
Dolly's brother Sammy Baksh, a popular singer in
Guyana
in the 70's and 80's had no choice than to open up the
coffin for the hundreds of fans and sympathisers who
turned up to pay their last respects to be able to see for
the last time, the belated Guyanese heart throb of Indian
dancing.
So it was, a pouring of grief, shock and dismay as we
all saw in her coffin what a beauty of a young
lady she was. One who was just snatched
away innocently, a gorgeous Indian princess laid there
robbed of precious life. Dressed like a bride,
reminded the mourners that she was not far off from
performing marriage vows with a young Indo Guyanese boy who
was also murdered by the demonic leaders who plucked
her life away. Black and blue marks of voilence
easily spotted on her very fairly like face, marks of the
Devil of
Burnham
notorious reign.
Soon after the African President who was on tour from
Africa at the time and was the last foreign guest along
with Burnham attending the show in which she danced, left
Guyana un-interrogated. Burnham later suffered
with cancer in his throat and died.
The lovely Dolly still lives in the hearts of Guyanese.
God rest her soul. Peace be unto Her.
Thanks for forwarding these comments to
me. Can you forward the comments to the folks at
Guyana Under Siege? I was at primary school and as a
child saw Dolly Baksh perform at a school concert. Very
soon after, as kids, we learnt of her death. My
recollection of the whole episode is vague. We just heard
that she and her boyfriend were murdered by the seawall.
The photo that is being circulated is haunting. Also, as a
primary school student, we had attended the funeral of Vincent
Teekah. I will one day document all these
recollections of the Burnham era through the eyes of a
child.

We should not forget the
circumstances surrounding the murder of Dolly Baksh and
her fiancée at Ogle foreshore. Dolly Baksh danced well at
a special function at the Residence, sparking a haggling
exchange between the Kabaka
(Burham)
and one of his militarists. Dolly Baksh and her fiancée, Tejpaul
Singh, were found decapitated commando
style that same night after the function.
Her boyfriend, Tejpaul
Singh (Tagepaul) he was a student at
Guyana Technical Institute in Georgetown. Either himself
or his dad was a school teacher I cannot remember. He
hailed from Industry front on the east coast demerara. I
think they were killed in 1979 or 1980 not sure. There
were two African presidents who visited Guyana in close
proximity around those days, Julius Nyrere and Joshua
Nkomo. I believe is was not Joshua who visited. You have
to get onto the newspapers like the Mirror they might have
records for visits around those years or the crime.
