Woman's hair cut off in robbery attack:
Minister to meet victim, others

MINISTER of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Ms. Bibi Shadick, will tomorrow meet the victims of the recent robbery of a family at Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara.

The Minister made the announcement on the programme, `Answers' on GTV 11.

According to the Minister, officials from her ministry will meet Ms. Anita Singh whose hair was cut off during the robbery, along with other victims of recent crimes, to offer any possible assistance.

Describing the cutting off of Ms. Singh's hair as "grossly degrading", Shadick said the Probation Department within her ministry is there to offer counselling to this victim and any other person who needs the service.

"My ministry is quite aware of this type of crime and all other which Guyanese women are subjected to and we will seek ways of reducing them. Sometimes all the victim needs is to talk to someone about their experiences."

A woman's hair, Minister Shadick noted, is part of her beauty and to have it brutally cut off with a knife is beyond degradation.

The robbery at Melanie Damishana follows a spate of similar violent crimes are on the increase across the country.

A number of persons were left homeless after bandits torched their homes and stole jewellery and other items, also on the East Coast Demerara. (Government Information Agency - GINA)
